OUR STORY

We did not start Health4NoVA with a master plan.

The year was 2023. It was a brisk October morning when we volunteered at the Virginia Dental Association Foundation’s Piedmont Smiles Mission of Mercy clinic in Warrenton, Virginia.

She was one of hundreds of patients who had waited anxiously since dawn, standing in a long line to seek care for herself and her children. Sitting in front of us, she shared her story. She had recently lost her job. Her two children lived with Type 1 diabetes, and her husband worked two exhausting jobs; yet, they were forced to choose between paying their mortgage and funding their children’s vital medicine.

"Where do we go tomorrow?"

she trembled in broken English, her knuckles turning white as she pressed against the seat. "How do we apply? Please, I just don't know… what to do."

We stood there holding her route slip, completely silent. We had no answers for her.

Yet, her story was not isolated. At clinic after clinic, we met working families who earned too much for public assistance but too little to comfortably afford private care. We met recent immigrants facing illness without insurance or knowing where to turn, and parents who had never heard of critical programs such as FAMIS or MCCP.

Mission after mission, the same gap emerged:

Resources can exist, but families can still slip through the cracks of a confusing healthcare system simply because they do not know what is available or how to apply.

We wanted to do more than help someone for a single day at a pop-up clinic. We wanted to build a lasting bridge from confusion to clarity.

That became Health4NoVA.
